IC
Name: Kouichi Aizawa
Canon: Nabari no Ou
Canon point: series end
Age: somewhere between 150-200 years, canon is not super specific. appearance-wise he's generally around 15-ish, but that can fluctuate at will.

History: Aizawa is from a world where ninjas exist, but they're more the historical kind than the Naruto kind. they're sort of like assassin-wizards. they're separated into five "clans", and each clan has its own special secret ability that's so powerful it can kill the user. above all of these is the Shinra Banshou, a sentient spell-thing that bops between hosts and gives its user power over all of nature- if they can figure out how to use it.

Aizawa isn't a human being, he's an owl. back in the 1800s, the at-the-time host for the Shinra Banshou decided to experiment, making animal-human hybrids and trying to create the cure for all diseases. unfortunately for him, he got overwhelmed by the knowledge of the universe and it killed him. he left behind a bunch of monstrous chimeras, most of which also died, but two of which did not. these were a cat and an owl who'd been given human intelligence and, it turned out, successful immortality. both of these "gifts" became something of a point of contention.

the cat and the owl didn't exactly enjoy the burden of things like guilt, despair, and existential dread. they also didn't like watching the people they liked grow old and die, over and over again. they no longer fit in with fellow animals of the natural world, and they couldn't be part of human society. this led them, ultimately, to make a pact: that they would simply observe the human world until they could once again locate the Shinra Banshou, the only thing capable of giving them the release of death.

the two sort of wandered through history, with and without each other, at one point learning one of the super secret powers, the ability to shapeshift. eventually, the Shinra Banshou resurfaced again, and the two sought it out. the cat became Shiratama, pet to the current host's family, and the owl became Kouichi Aizawa, adopted son of their close friends. some stuff (aka the plot) happened and in the end, Shiratama and Aizawa wound up caring for the Shinra Banshou's host, enough that they gave up their desire to die and instead destroyed the spell for good. this banished the Shinra Banshou's consciousness/will/entity to "the edge of creation" (whatever that means?). the cat and the owl were now unable to attain death, but they got the closest thing they could by following their "mother", the power that created them, to wander the void for all eternity. it's there that Aizawa heard the mysterious voice.

Personality:
  • naive: though he was given the ability to think like a person, this current "incarnation" of himself is the only time he's actually lived out a life as a human. somehow over the years, he's managed to retain a lot of that animal naivete he started with. he has human morality now, but his brain hasn't quite caught up. in some ways this is a good thing; it means he's friendly and well-meaning at heart. he believes in the inherent good of other people, and he's trusting sometimes to a fault. it also means he doesn't have a finely developed sense of right and wrong, but more on that later. he generally likes people and can get along in most social situations, but his lack of human experience means he's sort of awkward sometimes.

  • clever/curious: now that he has access to a human form and human things, Aizawa has quite the appetite for learning. he's mostly interested in the sciences, but he's also really into novels; it's suggested he learned speech from reading, and outright stated that this is how he keeps up with modern culture. he sees himself as an observer, and he's trying to do a good job of that. he's not curious to the point of obsession, but he also doesn't feel like he has to worry about getting hurt. he picks things up fairly quickly, even if he's not always good at them, and he retains a lot of information (some of it useless).

  • loyal: Aizawa is dedicated well beyond the norm. once he aligns himself with a goal, a person, or a cause, there's almost nothing that can dissuade him from it. he'll do just about anything to accomplish a task he's been given, even at the risk of his own safety. he'll go against his own best interest, or the best interest of people around him, just to reach a goal. he's the sort of person who takes his word seriously, and he'll really only break it if it serves another, more important mission.

  • ruthless: Aizawa's relative innocence does not mean that he's always good. as stated, he'll do just about anything to accomplish a goal, and that includes sacrificing both himself and others. he'll hurt people, emotionally and physically, to get what he needs, and he is absolutely not above murder. he's uncomfortably okay with it, actually. when he gets down to business, he completely sheds his awkward, friendly persona and becomes cold and single-minded. it's not that he has separate parts of his personality, but that he tends to hide his more violent side, and while the years have not destroyed his faith in humanity, they've honed him into a weapon.

  • denial: as he's lived most of his long life outside the norm, Aizawa has little experience with difficult emotional situations. when something happens that upsets him, or if there's an upsetting circumstance hanging over him, he'll tend to avoid it and even pretend that it just doesn't exist. it takes a direct confrontation to get him to acknowledge it, much less deal with it.

  • aloof: for the most part, Aizawa keeps people at arm's length. he observes people, he's usually nice to them, and he'll pretend a friendship, but actually getting close to him is very difficult. he has trouble forming connections, because he knows those connections won't last (and because he's emotionally stupid). he sees humans as temporary, and bonds with them are just as fleeting. this makes him incredibly lonely, and has long fed into his desire to be free of immortality.

Powers/Abilities:
  • combat: Aizawa is literally a ninja, so there's that. in a fight, he favors throwing knives, which he can aim with expert precision. he's not too shabby at hand to hand combat, either, and his "style" involves a lot of blocking the other person's attacks and hitting them from another angle. he likes to knee people in the guts. gets em every time. also, he's very familiar with firearms.

  • bird skills???: in human form, Aizawa retains his night vision, his "animal instincts", and his absurdly fast reflexes. in owl form, he can fly (of course).

  • elemental techniques: there's no hard-defined system for this stuff in canon, but he can do things like teleport a short distance while generating a cloud of leaves or dust (requires that these things be present in the area), incinerate flammable objects (there's no visible fire involved, stuff just gets turned to ash), turn metal objects into liquid, and one that seems to be unique to him, which is turning his blood into metal shards. these abilities are based on the traditional five elements (wood, water, air, fire, metal), where one acts on another. (for example, the blood/metal thing is metal acting on water.) in theory there's one of these for every elemental combination, but I'm gonna stick to canon ones.

  • memory alteration: if he can get someone to look into his eyes long enough for him to recite the spell for it, Aizawa can rewrite memories. in canon, he only uses this once, in order to make a man believe that he, and not Aizawa, was responsible for another man's death. so... it can go pretty far. if this ever gets used in-game, it'll come with a lot of discussion with the other player.

  • tenpenka: this is the secret art that allows him to shapeshift. as one of the super secret skills, it's very powerful, but it has consequences. for a normal person, staying in a shifted form for too long would kill them, as their cells die off from the strain. for Aizawa, he still feels the pain of it, but it doesn't kill him. technically he could turn into anything, but new forms take a lot of time and effort to learn, plus it's very unpleasant, so he sticks to the owl -> human spectrum. if he gets seriously injured, it'll break his constant concentration, and he'll revert to owl form or start showing owl-like features (feathers in his hair, claws, etc.). if his human form is completely wrecked, it can take him a while to get it back to normal.

  • immortality: much to his chagrin, Aizawa can't die, not matter how much damage he takes. he doesn't heal super fast or anything (though it is a little faster than normal), he just can't die. everything still hurts, and unless he's willing to push through the pain, injuries can still incapacitate him.

Regret: I'm making this as sad as possible; Aizawa's main regret is that he left behind the one person he actually, truly got attached to. but instead of making his way back to her, his current goal is to not have met her in the first place, to spare them both the pain of separation. he knows even if he went back to his original world, she'd just get old and die like everyone else.

Inventory: his current outfit (jeans, black t-shirt, hooded cardigan, sneakers, glasses) which is a little rough and bloody from a very recent fight, a spare pair of glasses (he always has one), a 2009 flip-phone, and a small assortment of throwing knives
